The history of Duo Penotti
1970 Penotti founded
The history of Penotti started in the 70s when Marcello Marsolo-Peeters, whose family originally came from Sicily, created a delicious chocolate hazelnut spread using Grandma Marsolo’s original secret recipe. At the same time the name Penotti, which comes from “nocciole” (Italian for hazelnut), was to become the brand name of all Peeters’ products.
1988 Duo Penotti
The huge success of this chocolate hazelnut spread did not go unnoticed and other manufacturers quickly followed suit… Marcello had to think fast again to create an unrivalled product. In 1988 Marcello launched a totally innovative product: a stripy white and brown chocolate hazelnut spread called Duo Penotti. In less than 2 years Duo Penotti became market leader of its category in Holland, outselling peanut butter and jams. Its popularity amongst children made it an everyday household product and Duo Penotti soon became one of the most famous brands. It was also the introduction of the iconic, stylish Duo Penotti jar as we know it today.
1990 Gouden Effie
The ambitious Marcello teamed up with an advertising agency to create the totally unique and innovative commercial with the two-coloured/ duo trousers. This commercial became a huge success and very quickly Duo Penotti became a very well-known product amongst children, teenagers and adults all over Holland. This commercial won the Gouden Effie* and gave Duo Penotti the brand awareness it still has today.

2000 Duo Penotti Dippi
Following on from the great nationwide success of Duo Penotti, Marcello Marsolo-Peeters decided to look for new ideas to widen the Duo Penotti range. Consumer research showed that Duo Penotti was not only eaten for breakfast, but also for lunch and as a snack throughout the day. It also showed that our consumers found Duo Penotti delicious when eaten straight out of the jar. This is what gave Marcello the inspiration for his new Duo Penotti Dippi: 9 crunchy breadsticks to dip in Duo Penotti. The perfect snack…
